English Language Learning Level 2 Social Studies is a course designed to improve the English ability of students while teaching them social studies content. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be taught as students study geography, history and current events.
This class is designed to complement the 21st Century Skills students are now required to show for graduation. It will reinforce the skills taught in the Social Studies 10 curriculum.
Geography: Students will develop skills that include map reading and interpretation, climate, contours, latitude and longitude, and scale calculations. Students will study the regional geography of North America.
History: Students will study Canadian history including the following:
Government
Early Canada
First Nations
Colonization
Building a Nation
Current Events: Students will examine important current events as they happen.
Learners will use skills, resources, and communication tools to:
Inquire, think critically and gain knowledge
Draw conclusions
Make informed decisions
Apply knowledge to new situations
Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our community
Pursue personal growth
At Walnut Grove Secondary we challenge our students to become actively engaged in their own learning.
Flexibility and personalization for student success shows through the teaching of key competencies such as:
Self-reliance
Critical thinking
Inquiry
Creativity
Problem solving
Teamwork and collaboration
Technological literacy
Expectations for this class include attending tutorial and homework club (Tuesday/Thursday in room 150) when a student has fallen behind. Additional time is also given most days after school until 3:45 and before school starting at 7:30.
ASSESSMENT: Formative Assessment Includes: 30%
Classwork (reading skills/activities)
Summative Assessment Includes: 70%
Writing Skills
Speaking skills
Tests /Quiz
The final mark will be cumulative, based on showing an improvement in skill by the end of the year.
Students who pass this course will take regular Social Studies next year.
